A business built on a vision, hard work, dedication and great customer service is an industry standard. How about a small family business, founded in 1998 by a husband and wife team, rooted in the basics of business building; fortified with dedicated customers who have watched our business as well as our children grow through the years, and helped us to overcome a great loss. Well, on paper we might just be a standard millwork business but what sets us apart from others is that we truly are family here.
Brad Houtz, the founder of Houtz Millwork, my husband, passed away in 2014 after a 6 year battle with Leukemia. Bradley had a keen sense of knowing just how to talk to people. He was genuine, funny and one of the hardest working people I know. He was and still is loved and cherished by all who knew him. He was a fighter in life and a fighter in death. As I fought for Bradley during his battle, I have attempted to keep his fighting spirit alive by keeping our business going in his honor. Having a team of employees who truly care about our business is the main reason I am able to do so.
Jose T. has been with us since 2006 and continues to be the backbone of the shop. He is a workhorse, very talented and is our Shop Foreman. As luck would have it, Mason T., one of Brad's life long friends, stepped in during Bradley's illness in 2013 to help out part time. It did not take long before he began connecting with our customers. Mason has since been able to cultivate and maintain great relationships and be a wealth of knowledge for our customers. He is our Estimator and General Manager. We have an excellent shop crew now and great drivers as well.
Although I no longer work in the shop, I still handle all the accounting, AR & AP for the business and have continued to employ people who sincerely love working here and have our best interest at heart. But, in all honesty I do feel very blessed as I know surrounding yourself with honest, hardworking, trustworthy people can be challenging. We have been lucky.
I still follow Brad's primary formula of running a business. Which really means there is none. No BS, no fake pitchy sales tactics, no cutting corners on materials or finished products, no price slashing only to increase later; when you mess something up you fix it right now, or how about just make it right the first time; and be sure to go above and beyond for customers daily. Even when he was very sick he used to say "I am going to get up each day and do something even if I can only accomplish one thing." He never stopped trying and he never stopped cracking jokes. We continue on with that tradition.
This business is very important to all of us. But, in reality family, faith, friendships, and our freedom truly makes life meaningful. When we get stressed out around here we all take a deep breath and say to each other, as Mason says, "relax, it's just wood."
To all of our customers who have been unwavering through the years and to our future customers we hope to build relationships with,
WE ARE THANKFUL FOR YOU.
Respectfully,
Wendy Houtz - Owner
Bradley
